YOU WON’T BE LAUGHING WHEN YOUR COVERED WAGONS CRASH

The inspiration for this post came from a bunch of directions all at once, it was crazy.

A couple days ago I was talking to somebody at work about Aesop Rock and how I was listening to him before I really got into rap in a serious way, and just about him in general.  Then the other day a new Harlem rapper named ASAP Rocky just came out with a new mixtape that I was checkin out last night for a bit, and that reminded me of Aesop Rock again.  Then I got 3 comments from my good long lost buddy Jared on this blog, who I haven’t heard from in years, and he was one of the main dudes that was getting me into Aesop Rock and other affiliated dudes around that time in my life.  Then today, among a bunch of totally unrelated songs, the song Daylight (by Aesop Rock) came on today at work, and I was like “ok Jesus I need to do some kind of Aesop Rock post”.  I probably wouldn’t have done one if SO MANY factors had not come together simultaneously like this (no disrespect to Aesop at all, I just haven’t been listening to him lately), but since they did, here we go.

I figured the best thing to post would be maybe the most impressive thing (in my opinion) I’ve heard him do.  On his Daylight EP, he has this song called Daylight (the one that came on at work today), and then he has another song called Night Light that uses most of the same lyrics but twists them and changes them just enough to turn the song into a sort of dark-side version of Daylight, like

Now it’s ‘Honor’ and I spell it with the H I stole from “Heritage”

becomes

Now it’s “Gutter”, and I spell it with the G I stole from “Get the fuck up”

Aesop Rock – Daylight

Aesop Rock – Nightlight

Oh I also really like

Life’s not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman,  you only call her a bitch cuz she won’t let you get that pussy.  Maybe she didn’t feel y’all shared any similar interests.  Or maybe you’re just an asshole who couldn’t sweet talk the princess.

Hell yes.  What’s up Jared?  Miss you buddy.
