RAP JOURNEY #8 – FROM FUTURE TO LTD

I’ve been gettin into this new rapper named Future lately, and one of his mixtape tracks took me on a cool little journey recently, so I thought I’d share it with you!

I first heard Future (like probably a lot of people did) featured on Racks, but I didn’t take the time to really look deeper into his catalog until much more recently, and so far I’ve been feelin it.  I feel like he does a sorta different thing with auto-tune than a lot of dudes do, I think it’s cool.  Most of the beats he raps on (at least that I’ve heard) are super synth-oriented, very few samples.  But this one track featured a pretty prominent one.

Future – Much More

This one didn’t take any time at all for me to recall, I used to listen to this album CONSTANTLY back in like ’05.

De La Soul – Much More

Microwave popcorn-ass niggas!  It’s pretty crazy to hear the same sample used in a new pop rap song complete with auto-tuned vocals a real tryin-hard-to-be-flashy video ALSO in a J Dilla beat on a De La Soul album from like 7 years earlier.  That’s a beautiful thing to me.  Not so distant after all maybe…  oh speaking of Dilla, did that “Are you listening??” stick out to you at all during Posdnuos’s verse?  If you’ve heard this song before, it probably did (that is, if your eardrums were open).

Illa J – R U Listenin’? (feat. Guilty Simpson)

Aaah this always happens!  I got all off track again, we gotta get down to what that original connection was!  Man.

L.T.D. – Love Ballad

Mmm.  There it is.  Nice.  Oh, one final note on this one: if you grab a copy of that De La Soul album (the one that has Much More on it) and flip it over, check the title on track 1.  Yep.  “The Future

  2. […] while cruisin’ around T-Town, I had a few expectations going in.  Like I mentioned back in this Rap Journey, I first heard Future featured on the bubbly, triumphant hit from last year, “Racks” […]
