FREEDOM DAY

Happy Freedom Day, everybody!

Believe it or not, I found this video back in December of last year and I’ve been saving it this whoooole time because I thought it would make a great 4th of July post.  I think it was worth the wait.

Wow – well worth the wait! I kept thinking that Abbey Lincoln’s voice has an instrumental quality. Not even sure I can explain that statement very well except to observe that her voice is not mannered but freely ranges through the natural capabilities of a human voice with accuracy and precision, fully compatible with the instrumental ensemble. Worthy of the holiday!

I totally agree. There’s a real sense of urgency in the execution of all of the instrumental parts and her voice fits into that intense mood really perfectly. I also think that it’s crucial that the lyrics be as simple as they are in a song like this; with so much complexity behind it, the total immediate matter-of-factness in the lyrics is really beautiful. Glad you enjoyed it too!
