SWERVE

It’s been while since I heard anything from Kanye where it was in any way apparent that J Dilla was one of his foundational influences.

Kanye West – Mercy (feat. Big Sean, Pusha T, & 2 Chainz)

You gotta hand it to Kanye, regardless of how you feel about his music, he’s put out some really cool-looking videos lately.  It was real crazy to hear sounds that I’m used to experiencing in the outro of this track on mainstream rap radio.

Jaylib – Champion Sound

Bonus track:

Kalyanji Anandji – Dharmatma Theme Music (Sad)

I’m glad you posted this. I heard that part in “Mercy” and thought it was interesting.

On a related note; do you think Kanye’s beats lately have been a little Lex Luger-y?

    • REDLiteDJ says:

Yeah, it’s interesting how he chops the sample up a lot, but puts it back together in a way that’s really catchy and fits in nicely with the rest of the beat. Reminds me of how he chopped up that Nina Simone break into the Get By beat.

And yes, I think he’s taking some definite cues from Lex. Kanye’s never been afraid to jump on bandwagons like that though, when Houston rap hit the mainstream he started throwing in a lot of Southern-style “EY”s and “WHAT”s in his beats, he’s always kind of absorbing what’s hot at the moment and injecting elements into his own production. Lex’s sound totally took over a big chunk of mainstream rap in the past couple years, so it’s not too surprising to see Kanye borrow a bit from that sound.

  2. […] Flocka himself appears several times on the tape prominently sporting the flow I mentioned back in this post.  The production is really interesting too, there’s considerably less ruckus and harshness […]
