BEHIND BARS

This almost qualifies for a BARE MINIMUM post, but there is a melodic component in there the whole time with the background voices, so I can’t quite let it into that category.  If we’re lucky, this will start its own category of illegally-shot and illegally-uploaded rap videos from correctional facilities, because that’s a genre I can get behind.  Unless the punishment for these kinds of infractions are super harsh, in which case I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.  Whatever the case, check out the first rap video shot in prison.

DIAMONDS, I EAT ‘EM

How many distinct polyrhythms can you count in this new Future single?  With the beat and the raps.  5?  I think I count 5.

Future – Covered N Money

I GOT HOES FROM JANUARY ALL THE WAY DECEMBER WANNA PLEASE ME

Young Thug & Bloody Jay – Movin’

My new favorite mumble-rap, even better than the chorus of “She Want That Money“.

BARE MINIMUM PART THREE – I’M YO PUSHA

Clipse – Grindin’

I remember memorizing the surprisingly complex snap-CLAP sequence (try it while dancing and rapping every word for full effect) from this beat for those crucial dance floor moments back when this song first came out.  Another great example.

Listening to that song today made me wonder – was anybody making celebrity-name-chant-hook rap songs before Lil’ B?

THEY CALL ME TONY

Plenty of rappers have made Tony Montana references in a songs, thrown in a Tony Montana skit before a track starts, sampled his theme, or named a whole song after him, and at least one owes his moniker to him, but it’s not every day you hear a rapper do a full-on Tony Montana impression for an entire song.

King Louie – Tony

Side note: look out for the Chance the Rapper cameo around 0:52.
