THAT’S WHY I’M OUT HERE ON SOME UNABOMBER SHIT

Nowadays all the singers think they’re rappers and all the rappers think they’re singers but occasionally somebody comes around that can actually deliver deliver in both events.  Porta Boy is just that somebody right now, and displays it masterfully on “Good Intentions” – you can clearly hear him switch from rapper voice to singer voice and back again every four bars in the first minute or so, and then the line starts to blur more and more throughout the rest of this chorusless jam.

Porta Boy – Good Intentions

If you’ve ever listened to a BJ the Chicago Kid album you know that heady R&B can get downright noodly at times but even Porta Boy’s more vampy moments never cross into that territory, there’s always a level of intention and purposefulness that keeps the music grounded and awake.  Here’s a more recent track that’s not quite as good but displays the same dualistic abilities, and has some more lighthearted energy in the writing.  Delivering a line like “something about the way you smile at your photographer / makes me want to hate on your photographer” without sounding lazy, goofy, or trife is an accomplishment R Kelly couldn’t even achieve.  Keep it up Porta!
