Having exclamation points in your rap name is the new having dollar signs in your rap name.

Sometimes just putting my full music library on shuffle is the best fucking thing I could possibly do.

I downloaded this J. Period/John Legend/The Roots mixtape when it first came out this past February, but I must have just not listened to it at all, because when this track came up in my full library shuffle, I was taken very much by surprise.

J. Period, John Legend, & The Roots – Dillanor Rigby (feat. Blu, & Porn)

Why so surprised?  Well, I first heard that beat on a weird Jaylib bootleg from before Champion Sound came out (yeah, it’s a Dilla beat), and I always loved it but it only lasted for like a minute before going into a different song (fuckin bootlegs).  Then I totally went crazy when I first discovered this song.

Guilty Simpson – Stress

I definitely dig what all those dudes do up top, but to my ears, this Guilty Simpson version is THE version.  It’s seriously one of the most heart-wrenching rap songs I know of, and it’s even more real to me now having been through some of the things I’ve been through recently.  Shit hits me real hard.

John Legend kinda gave away a big hint as to the origins of the sample these two songs share in his version, and I wish I could post up the source but I can’t seem to find it anywhere on the internet!  Damn shame.  Luckily, I stumbled across the LP that it’s on in the Guestroom bargain bin for like $1 a couple years back, so if you every want to hear the synthed-out Walter Carlos version of Eleanor Rigby that this sample is taken from, just hit me up and we can hang out and listen to that record together sometime.  That sounds nice.

You should probably know by my decision to completely remix Cosmogramma (chopped & screwed style) a while back that I’m a big fan of what Flying Lotus is all about.  I feel like he can really delicately skate that line between electronic music and hip-hop, and in the process kinda transcend both of them, it’s really awesome.  So far he’s mostly been rockin things instrumental style though, there are usually only a couple cuts per album that will feature a vocalist, and he’s actually leaned more towards singers than rappers thus far.

But there have been a couple tracks (one came out about a year ago, the other one just earlier today) that he’s done with a rapper named Blu that I think are really excellent, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that they’ll have more material in the future, because I feel like it takes a certain kind of rapper to keep up with that Flying Lotus sound, and I haven’t heard anybody do it as good as Blu does so far.  Keep it up, fellas!

I love how shit like this works out sometimes.

So if you’ve been keepin up, I just finished a series of posts chronicling my discovery of a bunch of old music by Gonjasufi (known as Sumach back then), so I was feeling really caught up on all of his music and I felt like I had a much deeper understanding of his whole aesthetic and where he was coming from and stuff.  It was a good feeling.  But then something awesome happened:  just today I found out that he came out with a new song, and he’s gonna be putting out a free EP in a few days!  What better way to lead up to listening to this brand new shit than to totally revisit his ENTIRE back catalog, right??  This is such an awesome coincidence, I’m really happy how this worked out.  In case you missed those older posts, here are some links:  Part 1    Part 2    Part 3

And here’s the new song!  The EP comes out October 24th
