5 SOUL JAMS I FORGOT ABOUT

This weekend was the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco and I had the pleasure of serving up many many hours of artisanal wild-crafted soul records from the mezzanine DJ booth.  Three days, 7 hours a day, no rap (family event).  It’d been months since I last did a set like this and I found myself laying eyes and fingers on records I hadn’t even thought about since I moved out of Oklahoma.  Here are 5 choice cuts that I had completely forgotten existed but are newly resurrected in my musical mind after this DJ marathon.

Joe Tex – I Gotcha

Stevie Wonder – Purple Raindrops

B.B. King – The B.B. Jones

Baby Ray – Just Because

Funkadelic – I Bet You

LIFE AND LOVE ARE THE SAME

Sorry for being gone for a couple days there y’all, but I had a little traveling to do and couldn’t really make any time to put anything up here.  I just got to Seattle last night to visit my sister and meet my sweet tiny awesome perfect little baby niece for the first time, and I have to say it was a moving experience to say the least.  To have a 2-month-old child fall asleep in your arms is one thing, and to know that that child has a natural-born connection to you in a very direct, personal, familial way makes it take on even deeper value.  There’s really no feeling I’ve ever had quite like it, and I’m thankful for all the people that allowed this trip of mine to happen so I could experience these things.  It’s gonna be a magical week.

Stevie Wonder – Isn’t She Lovely

Sorry Beavs, I know you can’t stand that song.

She’s not even my kid or anything, but I feel like I got a little taste of what Stevie’s talkin’ about in this song.

MY MONEY’S LOW AND MY SUIT’S OUT OF STYLE

I know I’m not introducing anybody to this song right now, but did you know he was 15 when he recorded this??

Stevie Wonder – Uptight

And if you can find the B-side to it anywhere online that doesn’t sound real crappy (I couldn’t), then check it out, it’s magical.  It’s called Purple Raindrops.  15!

MY LOVE IS STRONG, YOU SEE

Chris was really rockin my world today at work playing Diana Ross records for like half of my shift, it was so awesome.  One of the songs that stuck out to me today was that song she did with The Temptations called “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”, and it stuck out to me because it reminded me of this other version that I heard one time where she sings it with Stevie Wonder instead, and I think I might like the Stevie version even better (no disrespect to The Temptations of course, ever).   Plus this video is just awesome to watch.

Diana Ross & Stevie Wonder – I’m Gonna Make You Love Me

I also just found out that the original version of the song was recorded by Dionne Warwick’s sister Dee Dee Warwick, and that both of them are cousins with Whitney Houston!  Who knew?
